It’s almost Valentine’s Day, so I’m about due for a red scarf. I found a gorgeous red cranberry in Vanna’s Choice® yarn. It’s the perfect color for Valentine’s Day. The texture of the Crochet Sweetheart Scarf is shaped by working three basic crochet stitches — single, half double, and double crochet — in a single crochet stitch, skipping the next two stitches, then repeating the pattern. I used two skeins of yarn, but you can increase the length of the scarf by adding a third skein. The vibrant color of this scarf also makes for a great Christmas gift.

When making the single crochet, you only grab the top of the single crochet but for the half double and the double crochet you pick up two loops on the hook. Is this correct because it is a little difficult to do.I am crocheting the Sweetheart Scarf and my question applies to Row 1.
For single crochet, you insert the hook in the stitch, pull up a loop, yarn over, pull thru both loops on hook.
In the first row, you will make a single crochet, then a half double crochet, and followed by one double crochet in the first single crochet, skip the next 2 single crochet stitches, and repeat across, ending with 1 sc in last sc. Turn.
